Story icons

Introducing the nature of "story" should be through a fun discussion and a look back through favourite picture books. "What makes a good story?" "What does every story have?" Use a story sorting bag after you have established some of the terms used in describing narratives. Pull out items, one by one, and ask students to say whether they are characters or props. Ask students to dress up in costumes and hold some props - "Which story can we build, using these characters and props? Remember a story has a complication in it. A story always has a bit of trouble for one of the characters..."
